How To Be Honest With Yourself? 7 Steps
“Be what you are. This is the first step towards becoming better than you are.”
-Julius Charles Hare
One thing you must know in life to be happy and content is how to be honest with yourself?
We all are stuck into bad practices for a good frame. Never realize its impact on our mindset for a longer run.
I have met people who would agree with my opinions to not feel different and inferior. However, agreeing to anyone’s opinion doesn’t make you greater or lesser. When you try to fit in, lie to hide, and keep lying in fear of losing things or people, you aren’t being true to yourself.
Honesty creates a circle of love. That means being honest to yourself is also a sign of self-love. If you can’t be honest to yourself, you probably struggle with lower self-esteem.
What does it mean to be honest with yourself?
If I ask you one question here, are you honest with yourself? What will be your answer? It can be hard to answer, or you may say yes without knowing what being honest with yourself means to you?
Simply, being honest with yourself means being what you are, speak what you feel.
Take a look at this simple example:
You want to spend money to buy designer clothes. But you have been struggling to pay rent for the house. You think about both and go for the dress because you overlook the fact you are broke.
Is this justified?
You have to remind yourself that when you will have enough money, you can buy these expensive clothes. As of now, you have to accept the reality and be true to yourself.
Why Is It Important To Be Honest With Yourself?
If you practice honesty in your day-to-day life especially with yourself, you can live an authentic life in this world.

Acceptance
Bad experiences are part of life. It can be said that it makes your life meaningful. Face them with courage and be honest with yourself in the whole process.
Try to cultivate ideas and create opportunities for yourself, if you can do this, you can learn to see things as they are. You will be in a much better position to improve the areas in life which you have control over.
Admit your mistake
One of the most important things about being honest with yourself is admitting mistakes. It’s human nature to blame others or come up with excuses to hide their mistakes and protect their egos.
However, true self-esteem can only be achieved if you are comfortable and honest about your mistakes and also make efforts to correct them.
It is well said that the bigger the mistake, the more potential will be gained by you to grow and achieve something.
I believe in it!
Self-assessment
One small trick I am sharing with you in order, to be honest with yourself is to take out at least 10-15 min from your day (preferably at night) to analyze the events that happened to you in a whole day.
Now ask yourself some questions like How did things go today?, What could I have done better?
You can surely answer them honestly to yourself and also gain the confidence to do things better.
Remember one thing, your goal is not to hurt your self-esteem by analyzing your activities but to take out the information you have absorbed today and use it to improve tomorrow.
Take Care of Your Emotions
Emotions sometimes can become your strength, or it can become your weakness. It depends on the particular situation and also on your reaction to that situation.
How we react and take things makes a big difference.
If you know how to control your emotions in certain conditions and know how to act accordingly, you can win the battle from yourself only.
As sometimes you want to impress someone by being what you are not, will hurt you only.
Because you failed to act what you are not and triggered your emotions badly.
You confuse yourself and others also by doing this.
So, be very tactful when you tackle the situation emotionally and be honest with yourself.
Share With The One Who Cares
You may need some outer advice to solve your problems, and it is okay to do so.
But share with the one who cares for you, it can be your family member, your close friend or certified counselor, or coach.
Avoid Rumination
Avoid overthinking every single situation.
Rumination will indulge you into mental health issues, which will destroy your peace of mind for longer run.
You don’t have to sit with every bad experience, but accepting it and letting go makes you stay honest with yourself.
So, avoid rumination and let go of the bad experiences on a positive note. When you accept the situations, you make yourself stronger for the upcoming experiences.
Limitations
Another essential part of being honest with yourself is accepting the things that you don’t know.
The possibility can be that everyone knows something, but you don’t. You have no idea of some inventions, information, bad at general knowledge and you feel too bad about it. And also hide it.
But it’s okay to not know everything. You can rather learn and increase your knowledge.
Do not assume to know it and act like you know everything when others are denying your opinion.
Honesty is something that comes from within, but also needs practice. If you aren’t already honest with yourself, you need an enhancement. You need to start practicing acceptance. Once you start practicing acceptance, you will become honest to yourself. Its just that simple.
We have already shown you the 7 steps on how to be honest with yourself. Start following them and see the results.
